Paul E. Michel has over 20 years experience in environmental protection at the local, state, federal, and international levels. He is a nationally-recognized leader in wetlands, coast, and ocean management and protection. He has extensive experience in developing comprehensive natural resource and protection plans and coordinating collaborative projects and studies.
Mr. Michel has a B.A. from the University of Tennessee and a M.P.A. from Georgia State University. He worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and San Francisco before coming to the National Marine Sanctuary Program in April, 2007.
Karen F. Grimmer

Karen F. Grimmer was appointed as Deputy Superintendent in 2007. Prior, Ms Grimmer served as Program Operations Coordinator and has worked at the Sanctuary since 1999. She has twenty years of experience in marine resource management, and oversees the site's annual budget planning and execution, office safety and facilities, human resources, IT, Sanctuary Advisory Council coordination, and supervises a staff of ten. She has experience with a diversity of marine conservation and policy issues and founded a multicultural education program in 2002. She served as Acting Superintendent in 2006 and 2007.
Ms. Grimmer grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and served as the Director of Education for the nonprofit Marine Science Institute in Redwood City, CA. Prior to MSI, Karen worked as an aquarist at Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco, CA. Karen received her bachelor's degree in Biology from San Francisco State University and her master's degree in Education from California State University, Hayward.
