  Half Moon Bay State Beach

Beginning just south of the Pillar Pt. Harbor breakwater, the Half Moon Bay shoreline forms a long, gently curving sandy beach which is accessible at several points off of Hwy. 1. These access points are named Roosevelt Beach, Dunes Beach, Venice Beach, and Francis State Beach. A horseback riding trail runs from Dunes Beach to the bluff area of Francis Beach. Horse rentals are available in at least two stables just off Hwy. 1. Picnicking, kite flying, surfing, and surf fishing are popular activities at this set of beaches.

The town of Half Moon Bay is host to the Great Pumpkin Festival which is held annually on the third weekend in October. Other than pie eating contests, and pumpkin carving, the main event is the announcement of the winner of the biggest pumpkin. Great Pumpkin winners are usually well over 300 pounds. In an strange twist of fate, even though Half Moon Bay considers itself to be the pumpkin capital of the world, most winners are from Ohio.

A mile offshore is Maverick's, a famed big wave surfing spot. Winter storm surge waves can reach up to 20 feet high and are not recommended for novice surfers.

For more information about the beaches call (415) 726-6238.

Directions:

  • Half Moon Bay is 49 miles North of Santa Cruz, and 22 miles South of San Francisco off Hwy.1
