LiMPETS
Workshop
Sponsored by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the Monterey
Bay Aquarium
July 31st to August 2nd, 2004
The
LiMPETS (Long-term Monitoring Program & Experiential
Training for Students) Program provides a unique opportunity
for teachers to gain the necessary skills and confidence to engage
students in monitoring activities in the field. This hands on
program has been developed for middle and high school students
as well as volunteer groups, to monitor ocean and coastal ecosystems
of the five west coast National Marine Sanctuaries: Olympic Coast,
Cordell Bank, Gulf of the Farallones. Monterey Bay and Channel
Islands. This weekend workshop will cover two aspects of the
program: rocky intertidal and sand crab monitoring. Teachers
will be trained in the LiMPETS Program including online data
entry, and receive materials for use in the classroom. Teachers
will also be introduced to resources and curriculum from the
Monterey Bay Aquarium that relate to the rocky intertidal and
sandy beach environments.
The
weekend will include classroom/lab time at the Monterey Bay Aquarium
and field time at both tidepools and the sandy beach in the Monterey
area.
