Purpose
of the Photo Contest
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the largest marine sanctuary in the United States, and members of the Sanctuary's Diver Partnership Program are designing a new brochure to welcome divers to explore the Sanctuary. The dive brochure will focus on the ways that divers can enjoy the Sanctuary's world-class dive sites and protect the Sanctuary's marine resources. Top quality
photographs are needed for the new brochure, which will be a not for profit,
educational publication for divers. The Sanctuary is sponsoring a photo
contest through December 15, 2000 to find the best diving photographs
for the brochure. We are interested in amateur photographs of diving techniques,
diving activities, marine life in kelp forests and other marine habitats
in the Sanctuary. Winning images will be selected for their content and
appropriateness to the new brochure. Prizes will be distributed by the
Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation and the photo contest winners will be
announced at our next Monterey Dive Clean-Up in February 2001. Ownership and Copyright Rules 1. Ownership and copyright of all photo contest entries remains with the photographer. 2. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary reserves the right to announce winners of the photo contest and to publish the winning entries for promotional purposes within two years of the announcement of contest winners. 3. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary reserves the right to publish the winning entries in its diving brochure for a period of not more than two years following the award of prizes. Compensation for additional photographic uses will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis with the owner of the photograph. 4. Model
releases from recognizable people in each entry are the responsibility
of the person retaining copyright to the photograph and must be obtained
before the photograph is entered. 1. The photo contest is open to amateur photographers worldwide. For this contest, an amateur is someone who earns less than 40% of his or her income from the sale, production or publication of their photographs. 2. The photo contest is closed to all contest judges, employees and contractors working for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary or the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation and their immediate families. 3. All photographic entries must be taken by the entrant. All photographic entries must be taken somewhere within the boundary of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The photographs can be taken underwater or above water. 4. The judges will not accept aquarium or pool photographs, or computer-altered photographs. 5. The judges for the photo contest will disqualify any entry that exhibits any of the following: (a) animals shown in unnatural settings, (b) marine life being touched or mistreated, (c) animals being fed, (d) divers visibly damaging the environment, (e) divers kicking up sand or sediment, or (f) divers exhibiting poor diving techniques. 6. Photographs that have been published or have won previous photography contests are ineligible.
1. Images will be judged in the following categories:
2. First Place, Second Place and Third Place prizes will be awarded by the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation for each of the three categories. The value of each prize will be commensurate with the intended use in the brochure and the judging results for contest. Prizes designated for each category will be announced by February 2001 at our Monterey Dive Clean-up, and on the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation's website at: www.mbnmsf.org. 3. No substitutions will be offered for prize awards. General Information 1. All entries must be 35mm (2" x 2") slide format mounted on plastic or cardboard.
