In
partnership with many other regional groups, the Monterey Bay National
Marine Sanctuary's MERITO team participates in and offers a series of
special events designed to provide outreach for the Latino community.

field experience is one in a three part series offered in spring and
again in fall through the MERITO program. "Kayak Day", the "Slough
Hike" and "Tidepool Day" are ways to provide Salinas and Watsonville
adult students and their families with meaningful experiences in
nature. This Spanish bilingual event focuses on natural history and
watershed conservation of the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine
Research Reserve and it’s adjacent sanctuary.

This

nature. This Spanish bilingual event focuses on natural history and
conservation of tidepool ecosystems and wildlife viewing guidelines of
the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

Sunday, September 26, 2004 - Coralito’s Bay Book Reading at the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Día de la Familia Juan
Felipe Herrera, the author Coralito’s Bay read this beautiful story to
children in English and Spanish at the Monterey Bay Aquarium during
their Día de la Familia. Signed copies of the book were available for
purchase throughout the event. Coralito’s Bay is the story of a young
boy’s imaginary underwater adventures through the Monterey Bay National
Marine Sanctuary. This dream-like journey in his father’s adapted
flower truck shows young Coralito the natural wonders of living in the
Sanctuary, and how important clean waters are to it’s inhabitants
Coralito learns that the ocean, like himself, needs a clean and healthy
environment. The book is now available at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and
various local bookstores.

Saturday, September 18, 2004 - Coastal Clean-Up Day California
Coastal Clean-up event is run in collaboration with MBNMS, California
Coastal Commission, Ocean Conservancy and Monterey Dunes National
History Association. MERITO staff participates as Spanish bilingual
beach captains during the annual International Coastal Cleanup Day in
an effort to increase community participation. Volunteers are
encouraged to participate at our various locations, such as Salinas
River State Beach in Moss Landing, to help pick up trash and debris
along the California coastline.

Thursday-Friday, September 16-17, 2004 - World of Water, Santa Cruz County Fair
Organizations and agencies such as the MBNMS, California State Parks,
County of Santa Cruz, City of Santa Cruz, Soquel Water District, City
of Watsonville, California Rural Water Association, Ecology Action,
Resource Conservation District and others, provide a special "World of
Water" component to the Santa Cruz County Fair in Watsonville. This
remarkable “World of Water” festival provides school groups with
engaging hands-on activities involving environmental protection water
conservation.

Friday-Saturday, August 6-7, 2004 – MERITO Watershed Academy Training MERITO
hosts a two part training to prepare teachers/youth leaders
implementing the MERITO Watershed Academy afterschool program for the
2004-2005 school year. The Watershed Academy began in fall of 2002 and
has now expanded from one pilot program in Watsonville to various
programs throughout the Watsonville and Salinas regions. This program
provides hands-on, inquiry based watershed and ocean science
experiences to 5th-8th grade students that are predominately English
language learners.

Sunday, June 20, 2004 – “Coralito’s Bay” Book Release Celebration MERITO,
in coordination with the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation, hosted a
book release event for the sanctuary’s new Spanish bilingual children’s
storybook “Coralito’s Bay”. The event took place at Northridge Mall in
Salinas. Over 150 community members participated in activities
surrounding the "Coralito's Bay" theme. "Coralito’s Bay" author, Juan
Felipe Herrera, led children through re-enactments of the story in
English and Spanish and held a book signing session. Children also had
the opportunity to make Father's Day cards decorated with artwork form
"Coralito's Bay" while learning about sanctuary protection. Spanish
news media, Univision-Channel 67, covered the event providing an
exclusive on the MERITO program and the products it provides, such as
"Coralito's Bay".

Sunday, May 15, 2004 - Castroville Artichoke Festival
During
the Castroville Artichoke Festival, MERITO team provided visitors with
information about the sanctuary and fun and educational activities for
children. This multicultural event draws in about 15,000 local
community members as well as visitors from across the country.

Sunday, May 9, 2004 - Mother's Day at Elkhorn Slough MERITO
team participates in the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research
Reserve's Mother's Day Event. The event draws in over 300 people.
Festivities include kid's activities involving mother's day cards and
protection of the environment, guided slough hikes, music, dancing, and
free food provided by ESNERR, the Elkhorn Slough Foundation,
Watsonville Parks and Community Services and MBNMS. MERITO assists
during the planning of the event to provide bilingual materials and
promote Latino attendance. MERITO staff also assists Elkhorn Slough
staff during bilingual hikes.

Sunday, April 25, 2004 - Día del Niño & Earth Day, City of Watsonville Environmental
organizations and agencies such as the MBNMS, Save Our Shores,
Watsonville Wetlands Watch, Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research
Reserve, Ecology Action, Camp SEA Lab, Monterey Bay, Resource
Conservation District, ALBA and others, provide a special "Earth Day"
component to the City of Watsonville's annual Día del Niño/Day of the
Child celebration. Festivities include kid's activities involving
protection of the environment, access to the new Nature Center, music,
dancing, free food and sunshine. This festival brings in over 2,800
children and parents.

Saturday, April 24, 2004 - Annual Conferencia Familiar MERITO
team participates in the annual Conferencia de Padres Migrantes
(Migrant Family Conference) in Watsonville. The event is led by
parents, for parents, and focuses on providing migrant parents with the
tools to be actively involved in their children's growth and success.
The event draws in over 200 migrant parents. During the event, MERITO
staff conduct interviews to collect information on issues of concern to
the community. MERITO also provides information on the MBNMS and offers
free MERITO family field experiences and passes to the Elkhorn Slough
National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Sunday, April 18, 2004 - Salinas Kids Art Festival MERITO
participated in the annual Salinas Kids Art Fest at the National
Steinbeck Center. The event draws in over 2,600 diverse community
members to celebrate children and art. MERITO team provided information
and activities on watershed and marine protection for all participants,
as well as a marine art station for young children.
