Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary & Monterey Bay Aquarium Cartoon Contest

Purpose: The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) is a protected area of ocean waters and home to one of the most diverse ecosystem in the world, including 33 marine mammal species, 94 seabird species, 345 fish species, and numerous invertebrates and plants. It is the nation's largest marine protected area stretching from Marin to Cambria, with 276 miles of shoreline and 5,322 square miles of ocean, extending an average distance of 30 miles from shore. At its deepest point, the sanctuary reaches down 10,663 feet (more than two miles).The sanctuary's primary goal is the protection of the natural and cultural resources contained within its boundaries. The mission of the non-profit Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) is to inspire conservation of the oceans. The purpose of this cartoon contest is to create a series of characters in a cartoon strip to promote the importance of water quality and protection of the watershed that leads to the ocean.The cartoon characters will also be used on bilingual materials developed by MBNMS and MBA with an emphasis on the Latino audience.

Theme: The cartoon strip MUST in some way support the theme of protecting our watersheds, ocean and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.Cartoons can be animals or people.

Due date: Friday,March 16 at 5 pm.
