Students and volunteers are trained to monitor the sanctuary’s rocky and sandy shores.

Volunteers monitor beaches for stranded birds and mammals.

Volunteers are trained as kayaker naturalists and serve as sanctuary docents on the bay.

 




Monterey Bay Sanctuary Citizen Watershed Monitoring Network Monterey Bay Sanctuary Citizen Watershed Monitoring Network
A consortium of 20 volunteer citizen groups that monitors the health of the sanctuary’s watersheds.

An annual volunteer monitoring event held throughout the sanctuary’s watersheds to monitor and analyze water quality.

 




Urban Watch Urban Watch
Volunteers collect runoff water from storm drains and analyze it for contaminants.

An annual volunteer monitoring event held during the first major storm to characterize “first flush” storm water runoff.

Volunteer divers and snorkelers are trained to document fish diversity and population trends in marine sanctuaries.




Invasive Species Removal Invasive Species Removal
Volunteers are trained to identify and remove an invasive seaweed in the Monterey harbor.
