  NOAA Environmental Heroes
Since 1996 NOAA has recognized individuals and organizations throughout the United States for their "tireless efforts to preserve and protect the nation's environment." Periodically these Environmental Heroes have been nominated by the MBNMS.

1999 Environmental Heroes
This year, in 1999, there are 34 "Environmental Heroes" throughout the United States. Two of this year's Environmental Heroes, Rachel Saunders and Brian Baird, were nominated by the MBNMS. Brian and Rachel, both members of the Sanctuary Advisory Council, received their awards from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in recognition of their important and continuous contributions to the Sanctuary. Dr. Nancy Foster, Assistant Administrator of the National Ocean Service, and William Douros, Superintendent of the MBNMS, presented the awards to Brian and Rachel.

Rachel Saunders
Rachel Saunders was a leader in the citizen movement to designate the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in the early 1990s. As the local representative for the Center for Marine Conservation, she established a highly effective volunteer, interpretive docent program -- BayNet -- for the Sanctuary in the Monterey Bay region and the Cambria area. She chaired the Sanctuary's Conservation Working Group for the past seven years. She now is organizing an education program called SEA Camp Monterey Bay, a coastal and ocean science program for high school-aged students. She continues to be an effective and active advocate for the local and national sanctuary program.

Brian Baird
Brian Baird, who is in charge of producing a statewide strategy for protecting and managing the State's ocean resources, regularly cites the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and its Advisory Council process as a model of integrated coastal zone management. Brian, as an employee of the California Resources Agency, works in partnership with Sanctuary management to effectively promote resource protection. He was instrumental in the states accepting a $650,000 donation to develop a joint state-federal enforcement program for the Sanctuary.

1998 Environmental Heroes
In 1998, there were 25 Environmental Heroes in the United States, including one nominated by the MBNMS--Moss Landing Marine Laboratories.
