ÿþ MBNMS Sanctuary Education Panel (SEP) Meeting Minutes Thursday, May 18, 2000 - Moss Landing Marine Labs Attendance: Pat C. G., Liz L., Karen G., Steve C., Tim T., Jane O., Randy K., Lorraine R., Christy W., Ann B, Henrik K., Kenton P., and Lisa U. MBNMS Staff Education Report Liz/Karen vðLiz passed out MBNMS 2000 SSE Education Activities sheet vðLiz informed the group that there will be two new Education Specialists positions for Half Moon Bay (Northern) and Cambria (Southern). She also up-dated us on her status. Her position will be filled sometime in August and she will become a part-time Education Specialist. vðLaura Frances, SSE Education Coordinator is sponsoring a GIS Workshop in Santa Barbara which Diedre S. from MATE will attend. Then MATE and MBNMS will host a GIS teacher workshop sometime in the fall. vðSSE and the College of Exploration will be putting together a Virtual Teacher Workshop which will partly focus on the MBNMS. Steve Webster from the MBA and the MBNMS staff will be working with them in October for a few weeks. vðKaren Grimmer is planning a curriculum building day on August 16th to work on the MBNMS Teacher Curriculum. In addition to teachers, SEP members Pat, Jane, Kenton, and Jill Z. will participate. SAC (Sanctuary Advisory Council) Report Pat vðPat gave highlights of the last SAC meeting and informed the group that the SAC held a retreat on May 10th that was productive. She also informed the group that Stephanie Harlan was the new SAC chair. She said that studies are being conducted to determine the cause of death. Randy Kochevar - Monterey Bay Aquarium vðRandy announced that the new exhibition Splash Zone has been very popular. Kenton Parker - Elkhorn Slough NERR vðKenton announced the Volunteer training class is starting on May 31st. The Mother's Day event was very successful. Henrik Kibak - CSUMB vðHenrik announced that MOOSE (otherwise known as Monterey Organization of Science Educators) had a meeting recently at CSUMB. Chris Hasegawa, Director of ESSP at CSUMB and Eric Bull, teacher at Los Arboles, are the coordinators. Tim Thomas - Maritime Museum vðTim announced a new quarterly publication from the Maritime Museum titled The J. B. Philips Historical Fisheries Report. Tour of the Moss Landing Labs Lisa Uttal Lisa gave an excellent tour of the labs and grounds. The Friends of Moss Landing will be raising funds for displays in the entrance and for a new boardwalk that will lead visitors to the Salinas River.
