High School Students Hold Research Summit on Local Marine Environment

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary will host its annual Sanctuary Student Summit on Thursday, April 26. High school students from five central California High Schools will present the results of their projects focusing on ocean research and conservation issues.

Local high school science students volunteer time during the school year to conduct environmental monitoring and biology research projects in the Marine Sanctuary. Their research covers topics such as local water quality and tidepool health. Student researchers then present their projects at the Sanctuary Student Summit each spring. Their audience includes fellow students and local scientists, who provide feedback and advice.

?These high school students are amazing,? says Jen Jolly, a public educator for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. ?Their self-composure and scientific eloquence are inspirational. ItØs very exciting to help young people get involved in science and the marine sanctuary in such a hands-on way.?

At this yearØs Student Summit, students from Aptos High School, San Lorenzo Valley High School, North Salinas High School, Santa Catalina School, and Selma High School will present the results of their projects. This is the third annual Student Summit sponsored by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

Interested members of the public are invited to attend. The Summit is from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. in Lecture Forum 103 at the Monterey Peninsula College. For more information, contact Karen Grimmer at (831) 647-4253.

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is one of 13 marine sanctuaries administered by the Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The sanctuary extends from Marin County to Cambria, encompassing 300 miles of shoreline and 5,322 square miles of ocean. It is home to numerous mammals, seabirds, fish, invertebrates, and algae in a remarkably productive coastal environment.
