FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 5, 1996 Contact: Scott Kathey (831) 647-4251 or 4201 Sanctuary Treasures Revealed at Symposium Voracious whales, undersea rivers, and a fly-through model for visualizing Monterey Bay are just some of the topics to be served up at Sanctuary Currents •96 - a FREE symposium offered to the public this weekend by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The event runs Friday evening, March 8, and all day Saturday, March 9, at Glasgow Hall on the Naval Postgraduate School campus. According to Terry Jackson, Sanctuary Manager, –The Sanctuary office has received calls from throughout the country about the Symposium. We invite everyone to join us in the La Novia Room at Herrmann Hall Friday evening for free hors de oeuvres and an awards presentation.” Steve Webster, Education Director for the Monterey Bay Aquarium will open the Symposium with a presentation titled, –Ed Ricketts, Where Are You When We Need You?” Mike Weber, co-author of the newly published The Wealth of Oceans will open Saturdayês sessions with a discussion of the national and international importance of marine sanctuaries, and how research, education, conservation and business can coexist within protected marine areas. Saturday sessions will feature exhibits, computer demonstrations, and posters created by local school children. Special workshops will be held for teachers (K-12) to develop marine science curricula for area schools, and the Conservation Panel will conduct an exciting discussion of community involvement in ocean protection efforts. The University of California Sea Grant Program, the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments, and the Sanctuary are co-sponsors of the Symposium.
