Contact: Karin Strasser Kauffman (831) 659-2733 OR Scott Kathey IMMEDIATE RELEASE (831) 647-4251 April 16, 1996 SANCTUARY ADVISORY COUNCIL DISCUSSES KELP HARVESTING IMPACTS AND CONCERNS The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council will meet in the Half Moon Bay area on Friday, April 26, 1996 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Point Montara Lighthouse located on 16th and Highway One in Montara, California. "The meeting in San Mateo County is a direct response to the needs expressed by citizens for the Sanctuary Advisory Council to meet throughout the 360-mile coastal area bordering the Sanctuary." stated Karin Strasser Kauffman, Sanctuary Advisory Council Chair. She continued, "The Advisory Council has approved a calendar of meeting dates and locations for the remainder of 1996 and will focus agenda discussions on topics of regional importance whenever possible." The Sanctuary Advisory Council has planned a field trip for the afternoon and plans to visit some popular natural history sites around Half Moon Bay. A major topic of discussion for the April 26 meeting will be the subject of kelp harvesting in the Sanctuary and its impacts on the marine environment and marine user groups. The purpose of the discussion is to provide Council members with information on kelp harvesting and kelp forest ecology to better assess the potential impacts of kelp harvesting upon Sanctuary resources and qualities. Representatives from small-scale kelp harvesting businesses have been invited to speak, as well as representatives from the KELCO Company, the California Department of Fish and Game, and a kelp biologist. "We are concerned about recent allegations that the kelp has been seriously compromised by the present kelp harvesting activities," explained Terry Jackson, MBNMS Manager, "however, there is a multiple use conflict among several users of this resource, and the Sanctuary is encouraging a cooperative management solution." Page 2 The Sanctuary Advisory Council will be celebrating its second productive year of existence and holding elections for the positions of Chair and Secretary at the upcoming meeting. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council was established by Federal law to assure continued public participation in the management of the Sanctuary. Its twenty voting members represent a variety of local user groups, as well as the general public, plus eight State and Federal governmental jurisdictions. In addition, the respective managers for the four California National Marine Sanctuaries (Channel Islands NMS, Cordell Bank/Gulf of the Farallones NMS, and the Monterey Bay NMS) and the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve sit as non-voting members. The Advisory Council meets monthly and is based at the Sanctuary office at 299 Foam Street in Monterey. The meeting is open to the public.
