Sustainable Seas Expeditions -- Student Summit 2000
Students Hold Second Annual Summit on Local Marine Environment

What: Area high school students discuss the results of their local marine ecosystem monitoring projects at the second annual Student Summit 2000 hosted by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Media are invited to attend the Student Summit and interview students, teachers, and guest scientists.

When: Wednesday, April 12, 2000
1:00 p.m. Students, teachers, and scientists available for interviews
1:30 p.m. Welcome and comments from scientific panel members
2:45 - 4:00 p.m. Student Presentations
4:15 p.m. Student problem solving sessions
5:15 p.m. Student group reports and closing comments

Where: State Park History Theater in the Stanton Center and the Maritime Museum, Custom House Plaza, Monterey, California

The Sustainable Seas Expedition (SSE) is a five-year project of the National Geographic Society in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to study the nation¯s twelve marine sanctuaries. SSE will return this June to continue efforts to survey the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary using new one-person submersibles. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is one of 12 marine sanctuaries administered by the Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The sanctuary extends from Marin to Cambria, encompassing 300 miles of shoreline and 5,322 square miles of ocean. It is home to numerous mammals, seabirds, fish, invertebrates, plants, and other life forms in a remarkably productive coastal environment.
