Intertidal
Study at Point Pinos to be Funded The Monterey
Bay Sanctuary Foundation today announced that it was seeking research
proposals on the effects of human actions in and around the area of the
Point Pinos tidepools in Pacific Grove. The funding for the study, up
to $76,000, was made possible by a combination of City of Pacific Grove,
Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and Packard Foundation funds. "The Monterey
Bay Sanctuary Foundation was selected to administer the funds because
of it's low overhead, and reputation as a neutral, marine-oriented, fiscal
sponsorship organization," stated Dennis Long, Executive Director of the
Foundation. "The Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation was founded in 1995
to promote awareness and understanding of the marine sanctuary environment,
and provides fiscal management services between multiple organizations.
We believe that we are particularly well suited to assist with this, sometimes
controversial issue." The research
project seeks to evaluate concerns over the impacts that human collecting
and use have on the local tidepools in the Point Pinos area of Pacific
Grove. The requested research would be divided into two parts: one part
focusing on the biology and ecology, and the other on the socio-economic
aspects of human use of the tidepools. Researchers submitting proposals
are requested to respond to both parts with a team that they believe is
appropriate to conduct both parts. The objective is to get qualified researchers
to collaborate together to conduct the studies as an integrated package. "The issue
of human impact on nearshore communities is becoming more urgent as coastal
communities continue to grow," stated Chuck Davis. "We believe this research
will help us answer what those impacts are, and whether or not they're
significant." Chuck Davis is a member of the Point Pinos Tidepool Task
Force. The Task Force is an official body that has been given the authority
by the funding agencies to evaluate and select the research proposal to
be funded. Proposals
are due by 5:00 P.M. on August 15, 2000, delivered to: Monterey
Bay Sanctuary Foundation For a copy of the funding announcement, see the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation's website at: http://www.mbnmsf.org
