Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council
Meets in Cambria, CA on August 3rd, 2001

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council (SAC) will meet on Friday, August 3rd, 2001, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Cambria Pines Lodge (2905 Burton Drive), in Cambria, CA. The SAC is scheduled to discuss the Sanctuary's upcoming management plan review, and hear a presentation on the proposed California Department of Fish and Game Marine Protected Areas. They will also hear a presentation and discuss the Sanctuary-wide issue of desalination plants.

"The Advisory Council, and its working groups, are important tools in getting citizens involved in the management of this Sanctuary," said William J. Douros, Superintendent of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. "At the upcoming meeting, the Advisory Council will hear an overview on the Sanctuary's accomplishments over the last nine years relative to the existing management plan. In response to a SAC priority, Sanctuary staff will also present an assessment of the potential policy and environmental issues associated with desalination plants throughout the Sanctuary."

Advisory Council members will learn about some of the important issues and opportunities existing in the southern regions of the Sanctuary, and get an update on a SAC project to fund and develop signage for the Sanctuary's coastal visitors. Other topics to be discussed include the draft SAC Handbook, and a SAC subcommittee's recommendations concerning the National Academy of Public Administration report on the National Marine Sanctuary System.

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council was established by Federal law to assure continued public participation in the management of the Sanctuary. Its nineteen voting members represent a variety of local user groups, as well as the general public, plus seven local, state and federal governmental jurisdictions. The meeting is open to the public.
