Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council
Meets in Half Moon Bay on December 7, 2001

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council (SAC) will meet on Friday,
December 7, 2001, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
at the Douglas Beach House (311 Mirada Road), in Half Moon Bay, CA. The SAC is scheduled to participate in a public scoping session as part of the Sanctuary’s joint management plan review (JMPR), and hear a staff summary of the public’s initial scoping comments to date. They will also review the next steps in the JMPR, such as helping the staff to narrow the issues and develop action plans.

"The Advisory Council, and its working groups, are important tools in getting citizens involved in the management of this Sanctuary,” said William J. Douros, Superintendent of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. “At the upcoming meeting, the Advisory Council will hear from our management plan review team regarding the public input to date on issues of concern. In addition, SAC members will have an opportunity to raise issues and offer input from their represented constituencies.”

Advisory Council members will discuss and help define their role in helping to develop action plans for the new management plan, and get an update on the reserves working group, a subcommittee of the Alliance of Communities for Sustainable Fisheries. Other topics to be discussed include beach closures, and setting the February SAC meeting agenda, scheduled to be in the Monterey area.

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council was established by Federal law to assure continued public participation in the management of the Sanctuary. Its nineteen voting members represent a variety of local user groups, as well as the general public, plus seven local, state and federal governmental jurisdictions. The meeting is open to the public.
