Earth Day Weekend Sanctuary tour for underprivileged youth enrolled in a career mentor program aboard the O'Neill Sea Odyssey catamaran on Saturday, April 20th

Staff from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, owners of O'Neill Sea Odyssey, and 35 high school age youth from Watsonville, enrolled in a Career Mentor Program will tour the Sanctuary aboard the 65ft catamaran on Saturday, April 20th, 2002, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Harbor. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the O’Neill Sea Odyssey are sponsoring this special event. The group will earn high school credit while spending a day learning about natural resource and marine technology related careers such as park ranger, life guard, aquarist and U.S. Coast Guard officer.

"The Career Mentor Program provides information and first hand experience to students about the variety of vocational and technical career choices available for students when they graduate from high school, or go on to college,” said Karen Grimmer, Education Specialist of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. “This particular trip will be exciting as the students will meet in the O’Neill Classroom to learn about careers in marine science technology, State Parks, and the US Coast Guard, and then board a catamaran for an exciting on-the-Sanctuary experience.” This is the second program the Sanctuary has sponsored this year, with the last program led by former Assistant Superintendent and NOAA Corps Officer LCDR Michele Finn.

Watsonville youth will also hear from O’Neill and Sanctuary staff on various careers as they tour the bay. The purpose of the Career Mentor Program is to provide a multitude of resources and role models to the students who can provide support and encouragement so they will develop their full academic and vocational potential.

Media may participate in onshore activities between 8:30 and 9:45 a.m., or join the boat tour from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with RSVP in advance.

The Career Mentor Program is sponsored by the Workforce Investment Act in conjunction with the Santa Cruz County Office of Education and “Your Future is Our Business.” Currently the Workforce Investment Act, which provides services from the One Stop Career Services in Watsonville, is serving approximately 200 youth-at-risk. The students who will attend this field trip are currently participating in the Summer Academy, which emphasizes academic basic skills, at the One Stop Career Center.

O’Neill Sea Odyssey currently provides free educational lessons to 4th through 6th grade students on board a 65-foot catamaran sailing the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and in a shore-side Education Center at the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor.

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is one of 13 marine sanctuaries administered by the Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Sanctuary extends from Marin County to San Luis Obispo County, encompassing 300 miles of shoreline and 5,322 square miles of ocean.
