Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

I. Introduction

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS), the nation's largest national marine sanctuary, encompasses more than 6,000 square miles of central California coastal waters that contain a rich array of habitats and marine life. The MBNMS is part of the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS), which provides protection of these natural resources through research and education to foster public understanding and stewardship of this nationally significant marine area. The Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation (MBSF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to advance the understanding and protection of the MBNMS and other coastal and ocean resources in California.

The MBSF is contracted to provide the MBNMS with a part time Fisheries Education Web Researcher for a period of three months beginning in December 2010. The Fisheries Education Web Researcher will work directly with the Fisheries Education team assisting in the development of the educational website. The researcher's work will help expand the background information and resources we provide teachers participating in Fisheries Education programs. This position will work primarily with the "Voices of the Bay: A Voyage of Science, Community, and Heritage Through Local Fisheries Knowledge" (VoB) program, an informal place-based fisheries education program for students in grades 7 through college.

More than 30 teachers throughout California have been trained on the VoB curriculum. The VoB program provides students throughout California an opportunity to learn about our rich fishing heritage and its relevance and value today. Through engaging, hands-on activities, students gain a deeper understanding of the marine ecology, economy, and culture that surrounds them. The Fisheries Education Web Researcher will assist the VoB program by expanding the content and resources available on the educational website.

II. Duties and Responsibilities

The candidate will work with the MBNMS Fisheries Education team to:
  • Research background information on topics including (but not limited to): status of global and local fisheries, history of fishing, management, and science.
  • Synthesize the background information to develop and write the content pages for the VoB website.
  • Gather teaching resources to post on the teacher resources page for the VoB website.

III. Required Knowledge and Experience
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Training and experience with critical thinking and research skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to write prose that effectively communicates scientific and policy information to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to independently prioritize activities, manage time efficiently, and acquire new skills as they become necessary.
  • Software skills required include proficiency with MS Excel and MS Word.
  • Familiarity with fisheries, fisheries management, fisheries biology, and/or marine science preferred.

IV. Personal Requirements

The position is on-assignment to and located at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) office in Santa Cruz, CA. The Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation, Executive Director, oversees financial and human resource matters. The Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation is an "at-will" employer.

The work is expected to approximate a part time 15-hours per business week, from December 1, 2010 through February 28, 2011. The candidate needs to be available during the business day. The candidate will be expected to carry out assignments independently, while maintaining close contact with the Fisheries Education Specialist.

V. Furnished Equipment and Facility

The candidate will be provided a workstation at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary's office in Santa Cruz, with access to the Internet, telephone, copier, and facsimile machine. The candidate must provide his or her own personal computer.
