DRAFT MANAGEMENT PLANS FOR THREE CALIFORNIA NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARIES RELEASED FOR PUBLIC COMMENT NOAA is seeking public comment on the draft management plans and proposed regulations for the Cordell Bank, Gulf of the Farallones, and Monterey Bay national marine sanctuaries, as well as a joint draft environmental impact statement. The plans are the result of several years of study, planning, and extensive public input. (10/10/06)

Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Currents Symposium 2006: Marine Protected Areas: New Strategies for Healthy Oceans Human activities are threatening the health of our oceans. Can new networks of marine protected areas provide a way to safeguard the marine environment and protect ocean biodiversity? This is a free event, and registration takes place at the symposium. Vessel Construction of NOAA's R/V Fulmar A new 65' vessel is being built as a sister ship to the highly successful R/V Shearwater working in the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary in southern California. This vessel will be home ported in Monterey, but will serve the adjacent Sanctuaries of Central California (11/30/05) COMPLETED (R/V Fulmar Page)

Position Announcement for SIMoN: Water Quality Analyst The Water Quality Analyst will conduct an assessment of existing water quality data and water quality improvement practices (e.g. management measures) in the central coast of California and report and synthesize findings into a framework for ongoing regional monitoring and assessment. NEW FIELD GUIDE ENCOURAGES VISITORS AND LOCALS TO EXPLORE, ENJOY, PROTECT MONTEREY BAY SANCTUARY
The Field Guide can be used as a travel guide or for educational purposes. Readers will find information on each sanctuary habitat, from sandy beaches to the deep sea, as well as descriptions and photographs of the some of the sanctuary’s most commonly seen marine wildlife and the best times of the year to view them. It also includes tips for watching marine wildlife responsibly and keeping sanctuary waters clean. The guide includes is a detailed map of the central California coast which identifies points of interest, and a feature on things to do in and around the sanctuary. (6/21/06)
