Community Event - Film Premier: Il Mare di Joe/The Sea of Joe Please join us for a very special sanctuary event at 6:00PM October 22nd, the Monterey Conference Center, for the US premier of the 2009 documentary film "Legendary Fishermen - The Sea of Joe from Sicily to Alaska." Enzo Incontro, the film director and MPA manager for Plemmirio in Sicily, follows the story of one of the Sicilian fishermen who became legendary after traveling for 40 day trips in small sailboats to the coast of Alaska for salmon fishing. Joe Bonanno settled in Monterey with his family and has spent time between Sicily, Monterey and Alaska over the past 40 year. NOAA Protects All Species of Krill off the West CoastThe National Marine Fisheries Service published a rule prohibiting the harvest of krill by any fishing vessel operating in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ; 200 nautical miles seaward of U.S. territories) off the coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington. Krill are shrimp-like planktonic crustaceans, and a critical component of the marine ecosystem.(7/14/09) NOAA announces revised regulations for California National Marine Sanctuaries. These regulations provide greater protection for the sanctuaries’ valuable marine resources and habitats. They went into effect on March 9 for GFNMS, MBNMS and CBNMS; on March 19 for CINMS. (3/9/09)
