Background:
Long-term ecosystem monitoring is a fundamental element to resource
management and a requirement of National Marine Sanctuaries. By integrating
ongoing efforts at over 30 regional marine research institutions, and
filling in critical gaps, the Monterey Bay Sanctuary
can gain a comprehensive understanding of its resources and processes.
The Sanctuary Integrated Monitoring Network (SIMoN) has therefore been
designed in partnership with the regional science and management communities
to identify and track natural and human induced changes to the Sanctuary.
The goals of SIMoN are to: integrate existing monitoring conducted in
the Monterey Bay Sanctuary; initiate basic surveys or characterizations
of all habitats and regions of the Sanctuary; establish a series of
long-term monitoring efforts to fill in critical gaps; initiate specific,
question-driven monitoring efforts with fixed durations; provide timely
and pertinent information to managers and decision makers, the research
community, and the general public. For more information on SIMoN, see
http://montereybay.nos.noaa.gov/research/simon/welcome.html
Summary description of the SIMoN Scientist position:
The SIMoN Scientist will be responsible for developing collaborations
with regional scientists to share monitoring data, for interpreting
monitoring trends, and for working effectively with SIMoN staff to facilitate
a request for proposal process. The incumbent will work closely with
the SIMoN staff to make relevant monitoring information available to
resource managers and the public. Under direction of the SIMoN Program
Director, the SIMoN Scientist will also run the day-to-day
operations of ongoing Sanctuary staff monitoring programs such as beach
and kelp surveys.
This position is funded by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary,
through the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation in an annual contract
to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Qualifications/Skills:
Graduate degree in biological or physical sciences; ability to assess
experimental designs and trends in monitoring data; experience in conducting
marine ecological field work in the north-east Pacific; skill in building
collaborations in research, and interagency cooperation through the
use of interpersonal skills and partnering; ability to write clearly
and succinctly, including scientific journal style; knowledge of monitoring
programs to support resource management issues; highly
organized, self motivated, and strong interpersonal skills; knowledge
of Title III of the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act
and the National Marine Sanctuary System history and mission.
