Celebrating Fishing in Monterey Bay

Municipal Wharf II at Monterey Harbor and Maritime Museum of Monterey at Custom House Plaza

(Access Wharf II at Figueroa Street off Del Monte Blvd.)

Fishing boat tours and open-house with local fishermen, fishing and ocean exhibits, fresh Monterey Bay seafood, special children’s activities (arts and crafts, treasure hunt, hands-on fishing demonstrations and more), abalone farm tours, history of fishing tours, and fishing presentations and activities at the Maritime Museum.

Fishing Boat Tours & Open House  (Wharf II) Tour modern, commercial fishing boats as well as historic fishing vessels. Learn first-hand from fishermen about the different types of fishing boats and fishes caught in Monterey Bay including salmon, albacore, squid, sardines, shrimp, crab and others. Tours begin every half hour at the “A” Tier Gate and “H” Tier Gate on Wharf II

Exhibits and Displays (Wharf II and Maritime Museum) Hands-on educational displays and activities by local marine organizations: Taste a sardine and make your sardine can label; help mend a fishing net; learn about Monterey Bay fishes and fisheries research; get a close-up look at weather instruments; enjoy children’s artwork; create fishy crafts; learn about sustainable seafood and more!

Fresh Seafood  (Wharf II) Enjoy fresh Monterey Bay seafood brought to you by Wharf II restaurants and other food vendors. Taste an array of delectable dishes such as freshly barbequed salmon and albacore, calamari, clam chowder and more. Fresh fish available to purchase and take home from fishing boats at K dock (at the base of Wharf II) and fish markets at the end of the wharf.

 

Noon-3PM

Hands-on Fishing (Wharf II) Try your hand at fishing! Learn how to cast a line or set a crab trap. Fishing equipment and instruction provided, or bring your own fishing pole.

10AM-5PM

Monterey Maritime Museum Film showings of A Day in the Life of a Monterey Sardine Cannery, special fishing exhibits and hands-on activities for families. Admission: Children under 12 free; $3 ages 12 to 18; $5 seniors & military; $8 adults.

11AM-3PM

Treasure Hunt for Children (Wharf II) Pick up your fishing boat “logbook” and instructions at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and return to the Sanctuary booth to receive a free prize!

Noon-2PM

“Something’s Fishy” History of Fishing Tours Join Maritime Museum historian Tim Thomas for a half-hour guided stroll along the waterfront and learn about Monterey’s rich fishing history. Meet in front of the Maritime Museum.

1PM-3PM

Abalone Farm Tours (under Wharf II) Tour an abalone farm where live, red abalone are grown in habitats suspended in the ocean. Hosted by Monterey Abalone Company and Pacific Abalone Farms. Meet by the buildings near the end of Wharf II.
