The Friends of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories Present Dr.
Andrew De Vogelaere Wednesday Exploring
the Davidson Seamount: The Davidson Seamount is an impressive underwater geological feature that has intrigued people since it was first mapped as a sea mountain in 1933. Located 80 miles southwest of Monterey, this non-active volcano has a base that starts at 12,000 feet and steeply climbs to peaks 4,000 feet beneath the sea surface. The site's location and depth, however, have precluded all but a few brief scientific investigations. Preliminary glimpses of the seamount hinted of a place that appeared fascinating and unique, but the technology at that time did not allow for more thorough investigation. Today, scientists are better equipped to document this unique habitat and its species composition. In May 2002, Dr. Andrew De Vogelaere and a team of scientists, educators and resource managers completed the first detailed biological exploration of the Davidson Seamount. In his talk, he will share with you the types of technology they used to gather images of this amazing underwater feature, as well as introduce you to large, ancient corals, strange looking fish, bright-colored sponges and numerous undescribed species. In addition to sharing his teams discoveries, Dr. De Vogelaere will discuss new trends in incorporating public education with science in action, and the resource management implications of their expedition. Seminars are held in the Seminar Room of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories at 8272 Moss Landing Rd. in Moss Landing, CA. All community seminars are free and open to the public.
