Celebrating
the 10th Anniversary of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Program
of Events (All events are free to the public except boat trips)
Exhibits
and Activities:
10 a.m.
to 5 p.m. - Free admission to the Monterey Maritime Museum
Tour the museum for free in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the
Stanton Center.
11 a.m.
to 5 p.m. - Exhibits
Hands-on educational displays by over 70 environmental groups and agencies.
Climb aboard a hydrographic survey vessel; build and fly a
Remotely Operated Vehicle; touch whale baleen and marine mammal artifacts;
listen to underwater sounds; get a close-up look at oceanographic instruments;
create marine crafts including puppets, windsocks or fish prints; play
environmental games, assemble a 3-D puzzle of Monterey Canyon, view live
marine animals, help build a tule boat and more!
Noon
to 3 p.m. - Treasure hunt for children
Pick up your treasure map and instructions at the Monterey Bay National
Marine Sanctuary booth.
1:15
p.m. to 1:45 p.m. - Speeches by dignitaries
Tributes to the sanctuary from elected officials and others. Also meet
the children who created the Oceans Fair commemorative poster.
2 p.m.
to 2:30 p.m. - Blessing of the sanctuary ceremony
Bring water from your favorite beach, river or stream and join the procession
to the ocean for an interfaith blessing of the sanctuary and gathering
of waters led by Upwellings, Monterey Peninsula Ministerial Association.
Meet at the main stage.
2 p.m.
- Birthday cake
A slice of birthday cake free to all (while it lasts)!
11:30
a.m. and 2:30 p.m. - Fishing history tours
Join Maritime Museum historian Tim Thomas for a half-hour guided stroll
along the waterfront and learn about Montereys rich fishing history.
Meet in front of the museum.
Noon
and 3 p.m. Abalone farm tours (under Municipal Wharf II)
Tour an abalone farm where live red abalone are grown in habitats suspended
in the ocean. Hosted by Monterey Abalone Company and Pacific Abalone Farms.
Meet by the buildings near the end of Municipal Wharf II. (Access at the
foot of Figueroa Street from Del Monte Blvd.)
Boat
Trips and Tours:
11 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Drawing for free whale watching trips
Visit the Sanctuary Cruises booth and enter a drawing to win a free whale
watching trip. (A total of 50 trips will be given away!)
Noon
to 5 p.m. Boat tour (To be confirmed. Fishermans Wharf)
Tour a modern state of the art fishing vessel, the 78-foot purse seine,
Sea Wave, owned by Monterey Fish Co.
2 p.m.
to 5 p.m. - Boat trips (Fishermans Wharf)
Get a closer look at Monterey Bays spectacular marine life! Join
Randys Chris, Sams or Monterey Sport Fishing & Whale
Watching for a special 45-minute excursion on the bay for just $3 per
person. Boats depart regularly from Fishermans Wharf between 2 p.m.
and 5 p.m.

to 11:45 a.m. - Monterey Community Band (To be confirmed)
Noon
to 1 p.m. - Linda Arnold
Family concert by acclaimed childrens performing artist who created
the music for the Monterey Bay Aquariums Splash Zone CD.
1 p.m.
to 1:15 p.m. - Monte Vista Elementary School Vocal Choir
A singing birthday tribute to the Sanctuary with Monte Vista Elementary
students.
1:45
p.m. to 3 p.m. - Cocobeat
A lively worldbeat/rock band with a decidedly tropical flavor featuring
lots of Caribbean, Brazilian, Cuban, Reggae and Latin type influences
with side trips into blues, jazz, and Cajun and even country swing!
3:15
p.m. to 4:45 p.m. - Little Sister & the Bad Intentions
Fun, high energy blues band with an R & B flavor from San Francisco.

a.m. to Noon - Moss Landing Marine Lab Puppet Theater
Interactive, marine-themed childrens performance with striking hand-made
puppets.
1:00
p.m. and 4 p.m. - Film showing: A Day in the Life of a Monterey Sardine
Cannery
Learn about the historic sardine era of Cannery Row.
2:30
p.m. to 3:45 p.m. - Zun Zun
These award-winning childrens performers blend music, theater, humor
and lots of audience participation to promote environmental and cultural
awareness.

Get your face painted for free, with an ocean design.
11 a.m.
to 4 p.m. - Sea shanties
Strolling musicians sing traditional sea shanties.

Get your picture taken with strolling marine characters from the Monterey
Bay Aquarium.
