International Studies and Collaborative Management Program

Bill Douros, MBNMS Superintendent, will be in Italy for a six-month assignment as part of the newly developed International Studies and Collaborative Management Program for our National Marine Sanctuary Program (NMSP). The new initiative, a component of the NMSP’s international program, seeks to send a senior sanctuary manager/superintendent, or HQ branch chief, every year or two to another country for 6-12 months to evaluate and learn how that country (ies) manages its marine resources. Bill’s assignment will be to further develop the partnership that sanctuaries and the National Ocean Service have been cultivating for a few years. MORE

Overview of Goals for Assignment to Genoa Italy
There are four basic goals of the assignment to Genoa Italy:

  1. Study, understand and report on the management and operations of Italy’s marine protected areas (equivalent to sanctuaries)
  2. If requested, provide examples to Italian counterparts of successful programs and collaborations employed to manage US National Marine Sanctuaries
  3. In overview fashion, understand and report on how marine protected areas within the broader Mediterranean region are organized and managed
  4. Refine, and if feasible implement, the “telepresence” model to bring camera signals from MBNMS and other sanctuaries into the Genoa Aquarium MORE

Overview of Italian Sanctuaries – called “Marine Protected Areas”
Italy has one of the more developed programs in the Mediterranean to protect special areas of the coast and ocean. It has 20 currently designated “sanctuaries” (in Italian known formally as “area marina protetta”, or “marine protected area”); two areas, called submerged parks, that protect archaeological sites; and one vast, tri-national area to protect cetaceans that has been initially instituted. Summary of Site Visits to Some of Italy's Marine Protected Areas
While it is not possible to visit and observe all of Italy’s 23 marine protected areas, a goal of this project is to visit up to 10 of the designated areas and speak with the site director, key staff and stakeholders. (More)

Marine Protected Area Programs throughout the Mediterranean
A key goal of this assignment to Italy is to understand how the broader Mediterranean region organizes its marine protected areas and other coastal protection programs. This website will be updated in the future to provide that information about the broader Mediterranean region. Please come back soon for that update!

Local Color
I have been asked by folks to compile some of my thoughts, views, impressions, etc about working here in Italy.  So, with no basic priority, here are those thoughts, views, impressions, etc. MORE

Genoa and the Coast
Genoa has a long lineage of sailors, fishermen, explorers, and maritime industry. Most school children learn that Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa Italy, although sailed under the flag of Spain. Today it boasts the most visited aquarium in Europe, the largest intact historical center, and in 2004, is one of Europe’s cultural capitals (http://www.genova-2004.it). MORE
