There have been several studies over the years to assess the quality of water flowing into the sanctuary. In 2006 the MBNMS received funding to compile data from many local monitoring programs. The Central Coast Synthesis, Assessment and Management Project has completed a water quality assessment and strategic plan for monitoring water quality on the Central Coast.
