Resource Issues: Summary of Desalination and Water Supply Projects Within MBNMS

Pure Water Monterey Groundwater Replenishment Project - #MBNMS-2018-042

Description: Monterey One Water (M1W), the project applicant, is constructing the Advanced Water Purification Facility (AWPF) as part of the Pure Water Monterey (PWM) Project. The purpose of the PWM Project is to create a reliable supply of water, replacing certain water sources in northern Monterey County. The primary objective of the PWM Project is to replenish the Seaside Groundwater Basin, provide additional recycled water for agricultural irrigation, and help to prevent seawater intrusion in the Salinas Valley Groundwater Basin. The permit review and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA; 42 U.S.C. 4321 et seq.)process is complete.

Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project - #NOAA-NOS-2016-0156

Description: California American Water Company (CalAm), the project applicant, proposes to construct and operate a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination facility project (Project) in Monterey County, California. The permit review process will be conducted concurrently with a public process conducted pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA; 42 U.S.C. 4321 et seq.).

Monterey Bay Regional Water Project - #NOAA-NOS-2015-0069

Description: DeepWater Desal, LLC (DeepWater), the project applicant, proposes to construct and operate a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination facility and colocated seawater-cooled 150-megawatt computer data center campus project (Project) at Moss Landing, Monterey County, California. The permit review process will be conducted concurrently with a public process conducted pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA; 42 U.S.C. 4321 et seq.), and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). NOAA is soliciting information and comments on the range and significance of issues related to the Project proposed within MBNMS boundaries.

CalAm Test Slant Well - #NOAA-NOS-2014-0078

Description: California American Water (CalAm), the project applicant, proposes development of a slant test well, which would extend diagonally under the floor of the Pacific Ocean and into submerged lands of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) through the Dune Sand Aquifer, Salinas Valley Aquitard (if present in the project area), and 180-Foot Aquifer or its equivalent unit at this location (referred to herein as the 180-FTE). The slant test well is proposed for information gathering purposes. It will operate as a test facility for a temporary period (maximum 24-month pumping period) to provide field data concerning the geologic, hydrogeologic, and water quality characteristics of the project site. The overall project, including construction and decommissioning activities, is expected to take no longer than 3 years.
