Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary
Specific Requirements for Advisory Council Representatives

Spring 2007 Recruitment

Agriculture

  • Familiarity with the agricultural industry in communities near the Sanctuary;
  • Understanding the links between agriculture, Sanctuary resources and human activities;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with representatives from the agricultural industry in the Sanctuary region; and
  • Experience, ability, and availability to conduct outreach within the agricultural community consistent with the goals of the Sanctuary and the mission of the Sanctuary Advisory Council.

At-large

  • Ability to represent the community at-large, otherwise not represented on the Sanctuary Advisory Council; and
  • Experience, ability, and availability to conduct outreach within communities adjacent to the Sanctuary consistent with the goals of the Sanctuary and the mission of the Sanctuary Advisory Council.

Business/Industry

  • Affiliation with a business or industry within the Sanctuary region;
  • An understanding of the links between businesses and the Sanctuary;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with representatives from the business/industry community;
  • Experience, ability, and availability to conduct outreach within the business/industry community consistent with the goals of the Sanctuary and the mission of the Sanctuary Advisory Council; and
  • Commitment and availability of time for primary to co-chair the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s Business and Tourism Activity Panel (BTAP).

Commercial Fishing

  • Active commercial fisherman familiar with fishing issues within the Sanctuary region;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the broader commercial fishing community in the Sanctuary region;
  • An understanding of the links between the commercial fishing community and the Sanctuary; and
  • Experience, ability, and availability to conduct outreach within the commercial fishing community consistent with the goals of the Sanctuary and the mission of the Sanctuary Advisory Council.

Conservation:

  • Familiarity with marine conservation issues and management approaches affecting the Sanctuary region;
  • Experience working with or representing conservation or environmental organizations especially those involved with marine conservation;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the broader conservation community in the Sanctuary region; and
  • Commitment and availability of time for primary and alternate to chair/vice-chair the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s Conservation Working Group (CWG), which meets monthly.

Recreation

  • Affiliation with a recreational business or organization active in the Sanctuary region;
  • Experience, ability, and availability to conduct outreach within the recreational community consistent with the goals of the Sanctuary and the mission of the Sanctuary Advisory Council;
  • An understanding of the links between the recreational community and the Sanctuary; and
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the broader recreational community within the Sanctuary region.

Recreational Fishing

  • Active recreational fisherman familiar with fishing issues within the Sanctuary region;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the broader recreational fishing community in the Sanctuary region;
  • An understanding of the links between the recreational fishing community and the Sanctuary; and
  • Experience, ability, and availability to conduct outreach within the recreational fishing community consistent with the goals of the Sanctuary and the mission of the Sanctuary Advisory Council.

Research

  • Affiliation with a research institution within the Sanctuary region;
  • Familiarity with research issues and research projects within the Sanctuary region;
  • Experience, ability, and availability to conduct outreach within the research community consistent with the goals of the Sanctuary and the mission of the Sanctuary Advisory Council;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the broader research community in the Sanctuary region; and
  • Commitment and availability of time for primary and alternate to chair/vice-chair the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s Research Activity Panel (RAP), which meets bi-monthly.
