PRESENTATIONS
Institutional
Update: NMFS (Churchill Grimes)
- Sean Hayes
talked about current work on anadromous fishes work in Scott Creek
(Hatchery vs. wild)
California
Coastal National Monument (Rick Hanks)
- CA
Coastal National Monument is 12 mi, out from mean high tide, and
above, rocks along the entire California coast.
- BLM
(Bureau of Land Management) is the nation’s
largest land manager and has created the National Landscape
Conservation System
- Main
goals of the CCNM are protection, research and education
- In
planning stages currently; forming relationships with collaborative
partners is essential
- For
more information see: http://www.ca.blm.gov/pa/coastal_monument/
BREAK
INFORMATION ITEMS
Mac II
cruise debrief (Jean de Marignac and Tara Anderson)
- The
cruise was a collaborative effort with the MBNMS, CBNMS
and GFNMS, USGS, NMFS
- The
goal was to map habitats and associated biota distributions
DISCUSSION
ITEMS
NOAA
Ship time Allocation Process (Jean de Marignac and Andrew DeVogelaere)
- Andrew
DeVogelaere reviewed handout on history of McArthur
time usage; it is not reliable in terms of how many days are
allocated to the MBNMS annually.
- Jean
de Marignac presented the process on requesting and receiving
ship time; it is unpredictable.
- Andrew
discussed how it is generally unclear how the ship time is allocated
and thatthere is not much time to plan cruises, makes it difficult
to collaborate and the sanctuary is looking for flexible partners.
- Jean
reviewed the Report from the West Coast NOAA Ship Time Coordination
Meeting, conclusion: ship time is in high demand, not enough
NOAA ships, and collaboration is very important; it would be
good for Sanctuaries/NMFS to present a unified voice to request
ship time for the west coast.
- A
request went out to RAP to approach Sanctuary with any ideas
and proposals early to facilitate collaborations and usage of
McArthur II ship time, otherwise it is business as usual.
- Sanctuary
will be receiving 65ft. vessel in 2 years but will be using
Channel Islands Shearwater vessel in the meantime; a request
went out to RAP for suggestions and requests regarding this ship
time.
- There
was a resentation on preliminary data collected.
- Greg
Cailliet mentioned that there should be a meeting to discuss
identification of fishes and invertebrate species.
- For
more information see: http://www.sanctuarysimon.org/other/moreLinks/whats_new_mac.php
Re-visit
Northern Management Area questions relative to RAP (Chris Harrold)
- No
discussion, ran out of time
- Request
to RAP to get questions related to research in the new Northern
Management Area to Andrew before the meeting with Gulf of Farallones
next Tuesday
SUGGESTED
FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS
- Streamlining
Sanctuary research permits
- JMPR
research plan appendix
- Updates
on ocean observing programs (CIMT, CeNCOOS, CI-CORE). Presentations
on these different groups and discussion on how we can work together
(high priority)
- MPA
science integration processes (Churchill Grimes – NOAA
part) National Fisheries Conservation Center
- Presentation
on everyone who has organized a deep sea invertebrate
guide (SIMoN may play an integral role) Centralized Standardized
Organized Invertebrate
- Discussion
on defining role of RAP and how to deal with increased demand for
Science Advisory Councils
- Possible
new directions for the RAP based on the JMPR
