Science Informing the MLPA (Mark Carr)

  • Mark gave a presentation on the science in the MLPA process, including:
    • Role of the Science Advisory Team
    • Design guidelines related to MPA goals
    • Components of network design (e.g., size, spacing, levels of protection)

MBNMS FEDERAL MPAs INITIATIVE AND DISCUSSION

RAP's Role in MBNMS Federal MPAs Intiative (Mike Eng/MBNMS)

  • Mike gave an update on the process and timeline of the MBNMS Federal MPA Initiative
  • The MBNMS is in the beginning stages of conducting an Integrated Ecosystem Assessment (IEA) to assess the status of marine ecosystems and their components
  • Next steps include:
    • Convening an MBNMS/NMFS interagency team to develop a proposed framework for collaboratively pursuing an IEA
    • Update to SAC (August 21st)
    • Joint proposal by NMFS/MBNMS to PFMC (September 13th)
    • Prepare joint cross-cutting proposal to NOAA
    • Recruit additional participants
    • Begin scoping process (early 2010)
  • At this time, the MBNMS is developing inter-agency collaborations, and not requesting the RAP's involvement

Ocean Acidification and the MBNMS (Chris Harrold)

  • SAC Action Item: MBNMS SAC approved the recommendations of the CINMS Ocean Acidification Report
  • RAP provided recommendations and advice to MBNMS regarding the issue
  • Chris Harrold will provide written recommendations from the RAP to the MBNMS
