- Amendments to the NMSA enacted giving authority to create a 2-year Sponsorship
pilot project.
1995 - Interim guidelines produced by SRD and NOS General Counsel outlining process and procedure for creating an a National and individual Sanctuary Sponsorship Programs. 1995 - "Whale's Tail" adopted as NMS Logo. 1996 - MBNMS enters into an MOU with the MBMS Foundation, partly for the purpose of receiving donations intended to support MBNMS activities. 1996 - The 1992 NMSA Amendments are re-written and enacted, giving authority to move beyond a pilot project, into full promotion of a Sponsorship Program. Late 1996 - SRD directs all National Marine Sanctuaries to utilize the National "Whale Tail" symbol as their own symbol. February, 1997 - Draft MBNMS Sponsorship Program criteria and protocols sent to SRD for approval. September, 1997 - SRD approves MBNMS Sponsorship Program criteria and protocols. September, 1997 - MBMS Foundation established as first MBNMS Sponsor.
