Capitola
was founded in 1869 and is reputed to be the oldest seaside resort on
the Pacific Coast. Previously, the land had been occupied by Ohlone Indians.
Today Capitola Village is a popular visitor destination. The pleasant
beach and wharf are surrounded by shops and restaurants.
The beach
front Venetian Court is not only interesting architecturally, but is one
of California's earliest condominium-type subdivisions. Several popular
events, such as the Begonia Festival and the Art and Wine Festival, are
held annually in Capitola Village. The small harbor provides fair weather
anchorage for sailing boats.
Capitola
City Beach and Wharf as seen from East Cliff Drive looking south. The
first Capitola wharf was built in 1856 as a commercial pier for shipping
lumber and farm products from Soquel to San Francisco. Once rail service
was established, the commercial use of the wharf dropped off. The wharf
is still used for fishing, boat launch, and for renting boats. Facilities
include restrooms, a view deck, a restaurant, and a bait and tackle shop.
