The Spanish explorer Vizcaino named the Carmel River and Bay in 1602 for three Carmelite friars on the expedition. The southmost stretch of beach, which can be seen in the photo above, is commonly known as Monastary Beach. This beach is a favorite launching spot for divers exploring the underwater kelp forests, just off shore. Upwelling from the Carmel Submarine Canyon, supplies nutrients for the abundant marine life in the area. However, the deep underwater canyon also contributes to dangerous surf conditions. The safest diving access is either from the north end of the beach near a rocky area or at the extreme south. The middle section is too steep for safe access.
Limited parking is along Hwy.1 and restrooms are available at the south end. For more information, call (831) 624-4909. Directions:
