A set of high cliffs above the ocean, Davenport Overlook is a favorite picnicking and whale watching spot, especially during the annual California grey whale migration. A few cypress trees dot the grassy surface area, which ends in sheer cliffs that drop sharply to the rocky shore and crashing waves. When visiting this area, it's a wise idea to use caution at the cliff edges, especially with young children in tow. When in the area, another worthwhile stop is the restored Davenport Jail. It's one of Davenport's most delightful landmarks. It was built in 1914, but was never used much. Davenport was such a peaceful town that only a few drunks were ever overnight guests of the small two cell jail. It is now under the ownership of the Santa Cruz County Society for Historical Preservation and is open to the public as a museum of the north county coastal history.
