  Garrapata State Park

Just south of the Carmel Highlands, Garrapata State Park runs for about four miles along the coast on either side of Hwy. 1. The park was established in 1983 and has a number of hiking trails. The Soberanes Canyon Trail and the Rocky Ridge Trail are two challenging trails on the east side of Hwy. 1.

During the early winter months Gray Whales passing close to the coast on their migrations between the Artic and Baja can be sighted from the park. Soberanes Point is a good place for whale watching. Intrepretative panels provide information on the local marine life.

Limited restrooms and parking alongside Hwy. 1 are available. For more information, call (831) 624-4909.

Garrapata State Beach as seen from the top of the beach trail looking north.

Directions:

  • The beach adjoins Hwy. 1, 6 miles south of Monterey on the Big Sur Coast.
