See Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary on live TV!
Some of the world’s most amazing marine animals – gigantic whales, leaping dolphins, soaring seabirds, lively sea lions and playful sea otters will be shown on live television this summer.
Experience the Drama of the Ultimate Nature Reality Show
Leading public service broadcasters PBS and BBC will present BIG BLUE LIVE in August and September featuring the magnificent marine life of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. BIG BLUE LIVE airs on PBS, Aug. 31-Sept. 2 from 8 to 9 p.m. ET, with another live feed to the West Coast from 8 to 9 p.m. PT.
Filming taking place aboard the sanctuary’s R/V Fulmar
Big Blue Live will be filmed in the sanctuary from open-air studios aboard the sanctuary’s R/V Fulmar as well as at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Celebrating the “Serengeti of the Sea”
“We are thrilled the public will have a chance to witness some of the most incredible wildlife viewing in the world,” said Sanctuary Superintendent Paul Michel. “Often called the Serengeti of the Sea” the sanctuary’s abundant wildlife is due to an engaged public who actively supports protecting the diverse habitats and species found in this special underwater area.”
A Dramatic Recovery of Ocean Wildlife
BIG BLUE LIVE was inspired by the dramatic recovery of ocean wildlife in the sanctuary, which BBC series producer Adam White calls “one of the greatest wildlife conservation success stories on the planet.” “This is a very special place that attracts animals from the four corners of the Pacific. It’s a wildlife spectacle unique in the world. Most of the animals recently made a miraculous recovery. Few people thought they’d recover at all, let alone in the numbers you find here. If it can work here, it should inspire the rest of the world to take care of their ocean,” he said.
