Deputy Superintendent, Program Operations Coordinator
As the Deputy Superintendent and Program Operations Coordinator for Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Dawn Hayes is responsible for operations planning, budgeting and administering the site's Management Plan. She and her team support the efforts and infrastructure for ~30 staff at the Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Simeon offices and the Sanctuary's Advisory Council. Dawn graduated from Humboldt State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Zoology with a marine emphasis and a Secondary Science Teaching Credential in Life and Physical Sciences.
Dawn brings over 20 years of professional experience to the sanctuary and has implemented marine science programs for the Catalina Island Marine Institute, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Arcata High School and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County.
Ray is the Program Specialist at Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) from 2 May 2002 until present. Ray is responsible for MBNMS's budget tracking, line of accounting allocations, obligations, accruals, contracts, payroll web/TA, and credit card reconciliations. Ray also assists the Deputy Superintendent and MBNMS staff as needed.
Prior to coming to MBNMS Ray worked in DOD at Naval Research Laboratory for 8 years as a Budget Analyst, U.S. Fleet Numerical Meteorology Oceanography Center (Navy) for 4 years as Budget Technician, Naval Post Graduate School (NPS, Dudley Knox Library) as a Library Technician responsible for interlibrary loans with other public and private colleges and universities for one year, Naval Post Graduate School (NPS Comptrollers) as a Financial Analyst for 3 years, and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for one year as a Tax Technician.
Ray has worked for various business in the private sector as an accounting clerk and staff accountant and auditor for over 15 years. Ray attended Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) for two years, National University for two years, Golden Gate University for one year.
Sanctuary Advisory Council Coordinator
Erin Ovalle is the Sanctuary Advisory Council Coordinator, in charge of logistical and operational duties. Before working for the Sanctuary, Erin worked as an AmeriCorps member for the American Conservation Experience, a non-profit organization based out of Santa Cruz, CA. For six months she lived and worked outdoors, completing a variety of different conservation projects with the BLM and US Forest Service. In 2013, she graduated from California State University, Monterey Bay with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, Technology, and Policy with a marine ecology concentration. In her spare time, Erin enjoys playing multiple sports, body boarding, whale watching, and drawing
Sanctuary Exploration Center
Chris Young grew up in Aptos, spending so many long days on the beaches at Rio Del Mar. Chris received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of California, San Diego and then moved to San Francisco for the next ten years, earning an Master of Fine Arts from San Francisco State University and starting a family. With the arrival of a second child Chris and his family moved to Santa Cruz to raise the kids. Before coming to work at the Sanctuary Exploration Center Chris was a General Contractor and Construction Consultant for 20 years. Building and Designing spaces here in Santa Cruz.
Never far from the ocean or some other body of water, Chris likes to swim and surf and just generally mess around in the water. Rock climbing and canyoneering adventures get mixed with lots of jam making, pickling, beer and even whiskey brewing. Summiting a grand peak and sleeping beneath the stars.

Network Manager & Webmaster
As the Network Manager & Webmaster for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, my responsibilities include the maintenance of work stations and servers in the Monterey, San Simeon and Santa Cruz offices. I also maintain the MBNMS website. My back ground as an Apple Specialist has made the transition from technical support and training smooth. IT may be my profession, but my past life included professional cooking, firefighting, and 13 years in prehospital care.
