Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Specific Requirements for Advisory Council Representatives

Fall 2024 Recruitment


At-Large (2)
(1 Primary: San Luis Obispo; 1 Alternate: Monterey)

  • Familiarity with communities close to the sanctuary;
  • Experience and/or knowledge regarding marine management and resource protection issues in the sanctuary;
  • Experience and/or knowledge regarding public uses and activities in the sanctuary; and
  • Freedom to express views and cast votes independent of the expectations held by an employer, constituency or other organization to which the member is affiliated.

Business and Industry (2)
(Primary and Alternate)

  • Familiarity and affiliation with the local businesses in communities near to the sanctuary;
  • Understanding of the links between local businesses, sanctuary resources, and human activities; and
  • Ability and willingness to communicate with key representatives from ocean-dependent and ocean-associated businesses.

Commercial Fishing (1)
(Alternate)

  • Active commercial fisherman familiar with fishing issues within the Sanctuary region;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the broader commercial fishing community in the Sanctuary region;
  • An understanding of the links between the commercial fishing community and the Sanctuary; and
  • Experience, ability, and availability to conduct outreach within the commercial fishing community consistent with the goals of the Sanctuary and the mission of the Sanctuary Advisory Council.

Conservation (2)
(Primary and Alternate)

  • Familiarity with marine conservation issues and management approaches affecting the Sanctuary region;
  • Experience working with or representing conservation or environmental organizations especially those involved with marine conservation;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the broader conservation community in the Sanctuary region; and
  • Commitment and availability of time to co-chair and assure the continued operation of the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s Conservation Working Group (CWG), which meets monthly.

Recreation (2)
(Primary and Alternate)

  • Familiarity and affiliation with the non-consumptive marine recreation industry, groups, and activities in communities near the sanctuary;
  • Understanding of the links between non-consumptive marine recreation, sanctuary resources, and human activities; and
  • Ability and willingness to communicate effectively with key representatives from the non-consumptive marine recreation community in the sanctuary region.
